What is MFR?

What is MFR (Myofascial Release)?

Myofascial Release describes a manual therapy which integrates a biotensegrity model and restores the fluidity of the fascia, the body’s communication system. The therapist applies gentle, sustained pressure into restricted or tight areas, which are under omni directional vectors of force, thereby balancing all systems of the body. See images of tensegrity and biotensegrity here.

Read research by Dr. Stephen M Levin, a retired orthopedic surgeon, that explores the evolution of biological structure and why a tensegrity model needs to replace the Newtonian model.

What is fascia?

Fascia is made up of ground substance and elastin and collagen fibers extending throughout our body, uninterrupted, connecting every part, housing every system of our body — brain, spinal cord, organs, muscles, bones. Given it’s ubiquitous nature and non-linear stress strain relationship to all other parts, it is understandable why a “snag” or restriction in one area would exert pressure on and into the entire body. This pressure in turn results in pain and physical weakness from lack of cellular nutrition and information to whole areas of the body/mind.

What is a restriction?

Restrictions are areas of the body where the fascia has solidified and become dense and fibrous. These hardened areas result in mental and physical pain, weakness, fatigue, limited range of motion, and physical misalignments. Restrictions form readily from physical and emotional trauma, surgery, poor posture, and repititive stress. Fascial restrictions can manifest in the following labels and diagnoses to name a few: Back pain, Sciatica, Neck pain, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Fibromyalgia, Headaches, Pelvic pain, Plantar Fascitis, Sports related pain, TMJ issues, Herniated Disc, Infertility, Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis), Tennis elbow, Shin splints, Tinnitius (ringing in the ears) and Chronic Fatigue.

What is a typical session?

To address these misalignments, or ‘snags’ in the system, in each visit I will look at your posture and together we will determine where you are feeling tight, pulled, restricted, heavy, dense, weak, or off-center. Then I will palpate and apply the appropriate amount of hands-on pressure into the restricted areas. This may range from deep to gentle. Again, to address the omni directional nature of the fascial web, the pressure applied may be some distance from where you feel your symptoms. We will work in a standing position, sitting position, lying over a physioball, or with a massage table. It is an exciting process of growing aliveness and contentment as your bodymind resolves outdated bracing or survival holding patterns, new awareness seeps into your cells, your range of motion and flexibility increases. Hands-on techniques include but are not limited to myofascial rebounding, soft tissue mobilization/deep tissue techniques, neuromuscular therapy, active release techniques, myofascial unwinding, and gentle sustained pressure into myofascial restrictions.

Upon arriving to her space, Margi exhibits the ultimate combination of professionalism and friendly warmth, setting the client at ease on many levels. Her initial moves begin with a light, but confident touch, giving the opportunity to relax through trusting her as a therapist. I have never experienced even the slightest hesitation about trusting her integrity, skill and loving intention. Oftentimes, I have felt a total realignment, or re-attunement of physical, mental and emotional realms. ~MM, Minneapolis, MN

You come enough times and it gets better. You don’t just come when you’re hurting. My knees have gotten so much better. I’m 76 and I feel like I’m getting younger.       ~Dick, White Bear Lake, MN

Margi has spent decades seeking out the best teachers and perfecting her craft. Every time I have an eclectic experience that takes me back to the great bodywork cultures–a Vietnamese facial, a Japaneses shiatsu move, some technique I recall from my days abroad. And there’s always something new. This is a therapeutic, customized experience that helps me live longer, and get more out of life. I leave her office TRANSFORMED!                     ~Shaila, North Oaks, MN
